Every day, first responders face situations that most people cannot imagine. They rush into emergencies, confront danger, and witness trauma firsthand. While their bravery and dedication are widely recognized, the emotional and mental toll of their work often remains hidden. I am here to share who I am, what drives me, and why supporting the mental health wellness of first responders has become my passion.

Who I Am and What I Do

I began my first responder career in the military and law enforcement over 25 years ago, protecting and serving others. Very early in my extensive career, I witnessed many first responders lose their friends, family, careers, freedom, and even their lives due to the stress and trauma of the job. I rose through the ranks at the sheriff’s department from Deputy to Captain while also earning a Ph.D. in Psychology. Along the way, I also suffered from my own job-related emotional and mental health challenges for many of those years.  Drawing on my expertise, personal experience, and passion for helping others, I took the stage to reach first responders and their leaders, aiming to protect their emotional and mental wellness from needless sacrifice.

After my first speaking events, the long lines of audience members waiting to speak with me afterwards, sharing tears, their life stories, and heartfelt gratitude, confirmed the passion in my heart and soul: I need to continue sharing my story to save as many first responder lives as possible. Being limited by my full-time responsibilities at the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, I realized I could not fulfill my calling to share to a wider audience that was asking for my talks. Thus, I was led to retire from full-time law enforcement, transitioning to full-time speaking and consulting, allowing me to reach a much wider audience.

My work involves:

  • Delivering keynote speeches at events nationwide

  • Raising awareness about the importance of mental health in first responders

  • Developing workshops that teach coping strategies for prioritizing emotional and mental wellness

  • Providing one-on-one support and consulting

  • Collaborating with departments to build sustainable wellness initiatives

  • Raising awareness about the importance of mental health in emergency services

This role allows me to combine my skills in mental health advocacy with a deep respect for the courage and sacrifice of first responders.

Why Mental Health Wellness Matters for First Responders

First responders encounter high-stress situations regularly. Whether it’s a firefighter entering a burning building, a paramedic attending to a critical patient, a police officer managing a crisis, or a chief/sheriff leading an organization, the pressure is immense. This constant exposure to trauma can lead to:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Burnout and exhaustion

  • Substance misuse

  • Suicidal ideation and completion

Despite these risks, many first responders hesitate to seek help due to stigma or fear of appearing weak. This is why mental health wellness is not just a personal issue but a public safety concern. Supporting their emotional well-being helps maintain their ability to serve effectively and protects their long-term health.

How I Support First Responder Wellness

My approach centers on practical, accessible support that respects the unique culture of emergency services. Here are some ways I contribute:

Building Trust Through Listening

Trust is the foundation of any wellness program. I spend time listening to first responders’ experiences and concerns without judgment. This helps me understand their needs and tailor support accordingly.

Offering Tools for Emotional Resilience

I teach techniques such as mindfulness, breathing exercises, and grounding methods that first responders can use on the job or at home. These tools help manage immediate stress and build long-term resilience.

Creating Peer Support Networks

Peer support is powerful because it comes from shared experience. I help establish peer groups where first responders can talk openly about their challenges and support each other.

Advocating for Organizational Change

Wellness is most effective when supported by leadership. I work with departments to promote policies that encourage mental health care, reduce stigma, and provide resources like counseling services.

Real-Life Impact

One example that stands out involved a fire department struggling with high turnover and burnout. After introducing a wellness program focused on emotional health, including peer support groups and stress management workshops, the department saw:

  • A 30% reduction in sick days related to stress

  • Improved morale and team cohesion

  • Increased willingness among firefighters to seek help when needed

Stories like this fuel my passion and reinforce the importance of this work.

What Drives My Passion

My passion comes from witnessing the strength and vulnerability of first responders. They save lives and protect communities, yet their own mental health often takes a backseat. I believe everyone deserves support, especially those who face trauma regularly.

How I Help

I do not provide “check the box” presentations; there are enough of those that do very little to help anyone. To help as many first responders as possible, I draw on my career as a first responder, my personal experience with stress and trauma, and my Ph.D. in psychology to help both leaders and boots-on-the-ground responders protect their mental wellbeing so they can survive, thrive, and retire happy. Presentations use real-life scenarios and outside-the-box thinking to address what is missing from every other presentation, and copy-and-paste wellness programs.

In my keynotes and workshops, I provide practical education, motivation, and inspiration that supports healthier teams and stronger careers. I want you to leave ready to be the face of change.

The Vision I’m Working Toward

I picture a world where first responders aren’t making the news for alcohol misuse, drugs, inappropriate actions, or violence that traces back to unmanaged stress and trauma.

I also picture first responders who:

·        Survive the job and the cumulative impact of critical incidents

·        Thrive day-to-day with sustainable coping skills and support

·        Feel genuinely happy at work and at home

I believe this future is possible, and I want you to be part of what makes it real.

Why It Matters (and What I Ask of Leaders)

I’m a fellow first responder, and I know that law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, emergency communicators, ER staff, and other frontline professionals are everyday heroes. We show up for perfect strangers at the lowest points in their lives, and we do it while facing danger, addiction-related calls, and critical incidents. We also deal with administrations and politicians who are out of touch and cause even more trauma.

That service can come with a heavy cost, including traumatic stress and declining emotional and mental health. I don’t accept that as “part of the job.” Wellness and happiness are not sacrifices we have to make because proven systems and supports exist to protect them. We don’t have to lose our true selves, who we used to be, while serving those we protect.

To make that protection real, I focus on helping leaders and organizations:

·        Prioritize emotional and mental wellness as an operational readiness issue

·        Normalize help-seeking and ongoing skills-building (not just crisis response)

·        Incentivize and model healthy behaviors from the top down

·        Resource peer support, evidence-based training, and accessible clinical care

·        Build policies and practices that reduce stigma and remove barriers to care

·        Measure progress and follow through so support is consistent, not occasional

·        Empower every responder, regardless of rank or position, to enact real change

When we do this well, first responders can not only survive a career, but also thrive throughout it, and retire happy.

Together, we can create a culture where first responders feel safe to seek help and thrive both on and off duty.

I’m committed to helping YOU lead that change!
